On Mazey Day in June hundreds of schoolchildren process through Penzance town with sculptures, images and regalia reflecting the annual festival theme. This year it is ‘Golowan Goes Wild – About All Creatures Great and Small’.
The children create these images themselves in the weeks leading up to Golowan in school workshops tutored and assisted by local artists. There is a specific skill in working with willow withies to create huge sculptured images. Age, suppleness, strength and suitability for purpose are all qualities of the willow withy medium which are learned by experience, implemented through skill and passed on to local children through patience, dedication and commitment. FEAST is helping to support the continuation of this proud tradition.
