Seaweed in the fruit locker is a series of events by an LGBTQIA+ sea shanty choir who were formed by artist Rhys Morgan, to explore collective performance in marginalized communities during the British Art Show 9 in Plymouth. This project is now expanding its reach into Cornwall through performances and workshops during 2023.
As a queer person who grew up in a rural, coastal village, Morgan has always found shanties inaccessible yet still intriguing. Despite countless accounts of queerness within sea-faring communities, such as pirates’ same sex marriages in the 17th and 18th centuries, the queer community has largely been hidden and unrepresented. This work seeks to reclaim a space and celebrate queer identity through new shanty songs.
